This article is part of our Energy Myths series, where we uncover the facts behind common misconceptions about solar, batteries, and clean energy.
The Myth
Some people believe that as Australia’s electricity grid becomes greener, owning a home battery isn’t necessary. After all, if the grid is powered by renewables, why store your own energy?
The Truth
While progress is being made, Australia still generates 50–70% of its electricity from fossil fuels — mainly coal and gas. This means that once the sun goes down and you start drawing from the grid, you’re often consuming carbon-heavy power.
A battery changes the equation by allowing you to:
- Store your clean solar for night-time use instead of relying on coal or gas.
- Power your home during blackouts or peak-rate windows, ensuring energy security.
- Reduce reliance on an ageing, centralised grid, giving you greater independence and resilience.
Data from OpenNEM.org.au and the AEMO Integrated System Plan (2022) show that while the grid is gradually decarbonising, it’s still decades away from being truly emissions-free.
Why It Matters
Even if the grid is getting greener, it’s not green enough — yet. A home battery gives you the power to use clean energy on your terms, cut bills, and make a meaningful climate impact now.
